Spiritualized - Royal Albert Hall (1997)
Back home with the folks for a while. Gonna start posting things that are in my room. This is a really great live album from a terrific band, if you don't know them, check it out. If you like The Verve, Spacemen 3, MC5, Sun Ra, symphonies of sound and noise, that good stuff. Everything should be in 256 for a bit on megaupload. See mediafire? You ain't all that. Their sound here is vocally very smooth yet passionate, but the instrumental backings are exuberant and raunchy, the kind of combination that made acts like this such a threat to the established popular music of the era... From 1951 until 1955, they helped provide the soundtrack against which mainstream rock & roll was born and took root with the public. On that basis alone, this material is worth hearing and owning; it was the soil in which rock & roll sprouted, the stream in which other acts' commercial hits were spawned and nurtured. They later had their share of successes, but this is their real sound, raw, sweet and elegant all at the same time.

Staff Benda Bilili - Très Très Fort (2009)
Staff Benda Bilili are a group of Congolese street musicians. They live around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa, and play music which is rooted in rumba, with elements of old-school rhythm'n'blues and reggae. The core of the band consists of four senior singers/guitarist, who are all disabled (they suffered from poliomyelitis when they were young) and move around in spectacularly customized tricycles. They are backed by a younger rhythm section consisting of ex-sheges, abandoned street kids who were taken under the protection of the older members of the band. The soloist is an 18 year-old who plays astounding electric guitar-like solos on a one-stringed lute he designed and built for himself out of a tin can.

Baaba Maal/Mansour Seck - Djam Leelii: The Adventures (1982?)
Mansour Seck is a blind Senegalese musician born in Podor, in the north of the country. Seck was born into the Griot caste- although they are popularly known as 'praise singers', griots may also use their vocal expertise for gossip, satire, or political comment. From childhood, Seck has been a close friend of Baaba Maal, and in 1977 the two musicians travelled to explore the musical traditions of Mauritania and Mali.

The Congos - Heart Of The Congos (1977)
Produced with Lee Perry. Wonderful review of the album over at AMG. Myton has a trippy falsetto and Johnson has a warm tenor- the two compliment each other beautifully. I heard about The Congos years ago while talking to a random dude from Côte d'Ivoire in a post office.

The dB's - Stands for Decibels (1981)
Power pop classic. If you like Big Star, you should enjoy this. The songwriting was evenly divided between Stamey and Holsapple, although Stamey became known for writing the stranger, more avant-garde numbers while Holsapple would write the more accessible, poppier songs.

One of the most popular rock groups in France. I haven't heard their last album but they collaborated with Manu Chao and received some awards. Check out the song Le Vent Nous Portera, it's good. I have their second one here which is frantic with a few songs in English. In 2003, allegedly on a drug binge, the lead singer Bertrand Cantat slapped his girlfriend Marie Trintignant during an argument in a hotel room in Lithuania. During her fall, her head hit the bed causing her to bleed to death. Trintignant was a popular french actress and was working on a movie. A Lithuanian judge sentenced Cantat to 8 years in prison after a jury convicted him of manslaughter. Sentenced in Lithuania, he served time in a prison near Toulouse and was released a couple years ago.
