Fela Kuti and Africa 70 - Expensive Shit (1975)

From AMG: "This disc is an overt response to the consistent harassment afflicting Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Republic in the early '70s under the oppressive Lagos authorities. The title track is a direct reference to an actual incident that occurred in which the cops planted a marijuana cigarette on Kuti -- who promptly swallowed it and therefore destroyed any evidence. He was then held until he could pass the drugs from his system -- which miraculously did not occur when his fecal sample was then sent for analysis, thanks to some help from his fellow inmates. Because of the costs incurred during this debacle, Kuti proclaimed his excrement as Expensive Shit."

Erkin Koray - Elektronik Türküler (1974)

Wiki'd this guy to find some neat info -
"Widely acclaimed as being the first person to ever play rock and roll in Turkey; in 1957, he and his band gained notoriety by playing covers of Elvis Presley and Fats Domino... Koray became a controversial figure in Turkey during the 1960s and 1970s; he was actually assaulted in Istanbul, and on one occasion stabbed, for having long hair... Koray is also the inventor of the electric bağlama, a traditional Turkish musical instrument related to the lute."

Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career (2009)

Sweet, sweet Scotch indie pop. Her voice gets to me, all mellow and melancholy-like. Should be out next month, get it before the authorities.

Mirah - Advisory Committee (2004)

Die Winter Die! I've got more Mirah if anyone likes her as I do. She just released her 10th album, Aspera and it's good, but not like this... love or nothing for this one. Produced by Phil Elvrum of The Microphones.

Milieu - Colortone (2008)

Summer, ambient, warm like Boards of Canada.

Erykah Badu - New AmErykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War (2008)

You need this. Big up to MoNo who was spinning this for me last summer. The album cover looks like a tribute to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. Erykah brings the hardcore funk and trippy hip hop in this one.

http://www.mediafire.com/?wyzqxn4qdzl

And if you don't believe me...
From AMG: "New Amerykah, Pt. 1 has Badu collaborating principally with the members of Sa-Ra (who are present in almost half of the tracks), Madlib, 9th Wonder, and Baduizm/Mama's Gun vets Karriem Riggins, James Poyser, and Ahmir Thompson. If you're familiar with what these people have made in the past, you'll know to expect plenty of fearless weirdness and a couple relaxed soul-jazz backdrops that do not fail to stimulate. The album is easily the most hip-hop and most out-there release from Badu thus far, with beats bumping, knocking, and booming in roughly equal measure, sometimes switching tacks or vanishing midstream, dropping down dark corridors, gradually levitating into direct sunlight... you can only wonder how different it would be with some input from the late J Dilla, the beloved producer gets an incredibly touching tribute with the eight-minute "Telephone," written the day after the ceremony of his death."

Mi Ami - Watersports (2009)

The tribal yelling thing, abrasive at first, but kinda cool. There's no instrument to replace the scream. Kinda like The Rapture and !!! all that wierd disco punk.

The Pastels - Mobile Safari (1995)

Attached to guitars and detached from singing are we, both lady and lad, on this one. The Pastels wrote lush, brilliant, simple pop songs and never got much credit. Part of the Scottish scene they also helped launch Jesus and Mary Chain off the frontman's label.

Ravi Shankar - Ocora Recordings (1986)

There may be other Ravi recordings but this is the only one I have on CD. You have to be patient with this one... the tracks build up slowly but when it starts you will take off.

The Durutti Column - The Return of the Durutti Column (1979)

http://www.mediafire.com/?1tyvjmtmogu

Feed your Brainchild. The original vinyl sleeve was made of sandpaper so it would damage everything next to it in one's record collection. It's hard to pin down this music. Awesome synth and shimmering guitar, it smells warm like a summer evening. This one's for Cyrus.

Ensemble Instrumental National du Mali - Musolu

Musolu - Homage to woman. A collective of beautiful strings and windy flutes and drums, glorious chanting voices from Mali. The percussion and xylophone is incredible. L'ensemble était formée avec l'indépendance de Mali en 1961.

El Inquilino Communista - Bluff (1994)

El Inquilino Communista aka the communist tenant is some mid 90s noise pop in the vein of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., guitar drones, really neat melodies. Nothing too violent or whiny. I wish the singer would sing more (when he doesn't it comes off Black Francis), but as someone almost said, the sweeter the voice, the less believable.

Oudaden - Boustane Music

Jorge Amiden con amigos Luis Junior y Alen Terra - some dreamy songs in Brazillian accoustic folk. The singing features occasional choir-like high harmonies, occasional rock-outs.

Ride - Nowhere (1990)

The songs and swirling noise of this album are as potent as anything out of the shoegaze era - in fact, it was recorded a year before Loveless. Used to love this album back in the day. The drumming is just wonderful... some of the songs have that brit-pop vibe, but the hypnotic waves of crashing guitars take over... unfortunately my CD copy is missing Nowhere, but Here and Now is a nice way to end (first editions finished with Vapour Trail). I can upload some more stuff from them if anyone likes this.

Yussuf Jerusalem - A Heart Full of Sorrow (2008)

http://www.mediafire.com/?3ynky3ibmho

Beyond the first song, which is thrashy death metal, there are some sweet lo-fi psychedelic pop songs if you stay tuned. Reminds me of Brian Jonestown Massacre. The voice has a lot of box, but it's drone-friendly.

Swell Maps - Jane From Occupied Europe (1980)

Early droney guitar punk/psychedelic pop noise with some eerie/corny keyboard bits. These are really chaotic, stuffed-up fuzzed-up Brits. Kind of like mixing Jesus and Mary Chain and The Fall. The song Mining Villages makes me laugh.

Royal City - Alone At The Microphone (2001)

Bad Luck, Spacy Basement, You are the Vine... this album is full of treasures. It also comes with images of blood and decay, misery and regret. If you can get past that, a wonderful experience awaits. The songs are sung with lovely harmonies, accompanied by banjo and other creepy sounds of wisdom, bits of humour, and after a while, the pain becomes uplifting. Death is everywhere, death is in the air...
