So with Tohoku, the eruption of Fukushima, food oil and gold prices rising, floods/earthquakes/volcanoes, not to mention biological, epidemic hazards and pollution, it seems like SHT(E)arth a while back. This year is not going well. I wonder if those exploding underwater volcanoes are still going strong?? Whatever you want to call it, "climate change" or calculated change -- the passing of major disasters may increase alongside the ignorance of the media and masses. It is unlikely that government, business and the elites will work together to make strategic infrastructure/disaster management plans for the benefit of the poor, starving, angry, sick or old people. Right off the bat we know they're fucked (unless they know somebody with means who loves them :)
What is this occupy movement? Where will it lead and how many people can it touch? I hope people of the world with and without the resources necessary to protest can come together, communicate and build something.

"Millions of tons of debris from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March is headed for the West Coast of the US. A Russian ship has spotted a floating island of junk passing the Midway Islands northwest of Hawaii - some 2,000 miles from the source of the tsunami. And computer models from the University of Hawaii suggest it's due to hit the US mainland in the next three years. "Yesterday, i.e. on September 22, in position 31042,21 N and 174045,21 E, we picked up on board the Japanese fishing boat. Radioactivity level – normal, we’ve measured it with the Geiger counter," reported Natalia Borodina, information and education mate of the Pallada. "At the approaches to the mentioned position (maybe 10 – 15 minutes before) we also sighted a TV set, fridge and a couple of other home appliances." Subsequent observations found fragments of houses, along with items from drums to boots. "On October 8, the Pallada entered the port of Vladivostok, and Borodina was able to send pictures," says the STS Pallada in a statement. "The most remarkable one is of a small fishing vessel about 20 feet long, which they were able to hoist up onto the Pallada. The markings on the wheel house of the boat show its home port to be in the Fukushima Prefecture, the area hardest hit by the tsunami." The debris was found exactly where predicted by the University of Hawaii's International Pacific Research Center (IPRC) computer models - although it got there a little faster than expected. It's expected to first make landfall in the Windward Islands sometime in December. What fails to wash up there will head onwards to the main Hawaiian Islands and the North American West Coast. Altogether, there's believed to be as much as 20 million tons of debris on its way."

The USGS is preparing for ARkStorm

There is no anticipated timeline for these events but based on proposal requests, Spring/Summer 2011 we may start witnessing an increase in extreme weather activity. Some websites have published future maps of the world/North America after the pole shift. Could we see the loss of California, most of the west coast, massive flooding, and the widening of the Mississippi by hundreds of miles? If it occurs, I hope this process will be gradual.

I don't have a title for this post. I chose to use the Roman numeric date instead, because I find this sequence of numbers interesting. And yet this is only one calendar, one way of marking our passage through time. The precession of the equinoxes is another. Many ancient civilizations and tribes have stories, prophecies, temples and shrines to mark the celestial phenomenon of precession and the transition from one age to another. Are we experiencing manifestations of this movement through climate change, natural disasters, and political strife? Or is it merely an astronomical astrological coincidence?
Over the past few weeks I have been examining global trends and doing research on space and global weather phenomena. I don't have a large history of data or a high degree of scientific expertise in seismology, climatology or astrophysics. I don't claim to be a prophet or an empath. I cannot predict what will happen as we wobble towards the future. I search for the little vibrations of our planet and interpret whatever patterns I may find.

Been absent of mind and space for a while... time to share some discoveries. After viewing some Orchestre Baobab performances on YouTube I was linked to a song called Ballakè by Bembeya Jazz National.

The soothing voice, horns, and gentle bass guitar was enchanting. Searching for their music, I discovered a compilation album online representing some of Guinea's jazz between 1965-1980.

Dark treasure box of heaven. Volume 1 covers their singles/EPs from the beginning all the way to Heaven or Las Vegas. The first volume showcases their early industrial, almost punk sound (akin to Killing Joke, Siouxsie and the Banshees) before it drifts into waves of bliss. Volume 2 contains their later work, some accoustic versions and remixes - it's too delicate for my liking, but Fraser's voice is hard to ignore.

Kâzım Koyuncu was an ethnic Laz, activist and folk-rock singer. He sung in many languages, some I never knew existed. Hayde has a wide range of sounds; pounding drums, soulful chants and tulum, graceful guitar and violin, and probably my favourite, the frantic kemenche. The immediate shifts between delirious dancing music and melancholy duos is strange. Nevertheless, the music is beautiful, highly recommended. I was sad to learn he died of cancer a few years ago, ostensibly from causes against which he was campaigning. Next I will be posting a few compilations of Turkish music, from the 70s and today.

I'm going to post more music eventually but also try to write more here and there.

I am reading a phenomenal book called Fire and Fury which is about the largely untold Allied bombing of Germany during WW2. There are hundreds of entertaining moments: portraits of charismatic madmen (Harris, Göring), intriguing and horrifying details about political and strategic tactics, and the gruesome experiences of pilots and civilians. Essentially, a few powerful men (Portal and Harris) decided that night-bombing of residential and cultural sites with heavy explosives and incendiaries would win the war. The Americans preferred strategic day-time bombing of specific industrial targets, and figured the Nazis were so heavily indoctrinated that bombing civilians would only intensify their war production. While both contributed to Germany's defeat, the war could have ended sooner had the Allies coordinated their bombing campaigns to defeat the military-industrial complex. While German citizens were boiled alive in canals from the firestorms, they became united, just as the Brits were during the Blitz, by the indiscriminate nature of civilian bombing. One sentence in particular struck me: "In one of the war's ironies, British angels were prepared to go where German devils feared to tread."

For example, one incredible story is when both Britain and Germany were developing radar (and radar-jamming) at exactly the same time. The Brits knew that a technique called Window (dropping metal strips from the planes in a coordinated manner by planes flying in single file) would allow a surprise attack knowing it would cause havoc for German radar. However, they feared using this tactic, as the Germans would retaliate. Nevertheless, a reluctant Churchill approved this strategy. In an incredible twist of fate, the Germans had developed similar technology, but their air commander had all the research destroyed, fearing it would lead to mutually assured destruction. A few weeks later, the firebombing of Hamburg (codenamed Operation Gomorrah) was a stunning success.

I turned on the computer, sat down on my uncomfortable chair, and felt two sensations: crotch chafing and coffee gut. I looked around my surroundings. They did not have a desk or computer for me, so I am sitting in Ragavan’s cubicle, or, as I prefer, Raga’s cube, which sounds mystic and magical. It is clear that he treasures his two young children and their horrific artwork, which consists of a mixed race dinosaur (really more of a dino-bird-rat), other unidentifiable creatures, and some sort of depressed kite with a single coloured string stapled to its face. There are other little trinkets and mysteries here. Miniature plastic Asian dolls, a large box of salt, a bag of instant honeyed ginger drink, and a note which states: Hope you like our muffins?? Ragamuffin = Peanut butter + jam. Sitting at Ragavan’s desk makes me squirm a little. There are ten pairs of shoes under the desk (fungus?) and a big tub of Vaseline – more fungus? I can’t reveal to you where I am employed; that information is classified. Let’s just say I work in the civil service.

How to describe Dead Can Dance? It's like medieval folk music with haunting, hypnotic chants and ambient noises. On occasion you will hear the bass guitar and drums, but more often there are weird string instruments and trippy harmonies. Sometimes Gerrard's Gregorian-like vocals are a bit overwhelming but she is quite soothing once you get into it. The only negative is that when Perry sings he kinda freaks me out, and the songs are not sequenced well... but they are powerful. They could have used their gorgeous instruments and written pop songs, but they didn't. It is beautiful because I have nothing that sounds so elegant, foreign and ancient. 4AD really had it going on with DCD and the Cocteau Twins. A really bizarre but intriguing album from my collection.

Well, for some reason I figured out how to play guitar tonight. Have had one for years, played it off and on. It just clicked all of a sudden. I can almost play what's in my head. So I have been jamming away to myself and it feels swell. Staff Benda Bilili are a group of Congolese street musicians. They live around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa, and play music which is rooted in rumba, with elements of old-school rhythm'n'blues and reggae. The core of the band consists of four senior singers/guitarist, who are all disabled (they suffered from poliomyelitis when they were young) and move around in spectacularly customized tricycles. They are backed by a younger rhythm section consisting of ex-sheges, abandoned street kids who were taken under the protection of the older members of the band. The soloist is an 18 year-old who plays astounding electric guitar-like solos on a one-stringed lute he designed and built for himself out of a tin can.
