Rokia Traoré - Bowmboï (2003)

Plays with the harmonies of the balafon (lute) and n'goni (crazy xylophone-like thingy), groovy kora and calabash percussion, powerful beautiful voice... this is compelling music.

Erm... actually, it's the other way round : the balafon is a xylophone, and the doussoun'gouni belongs to the lute family.
Minor gripe aside, you have faultless musical taste. Rokia Traoré, Oumou Sangaré, Replikas, early Père Ubu, Mingus and the Congos? Cooler than cool! You should check out ZeN, Murat Ertel's band from before Baba Zula — much more daring and experimental, they sounded a lot like Can and Faust. I saw they had all their albums in R&D on Istilklal this afternoon (I'm only passing through town).
Speaking of experimental zounds, check out ONO from Chicago:

They are currently recording a new album, says frontman travis.
Take care!
